ARMCHAIR observing the Middle East since around the age of 10, introduced to it by and staying up to watch the show that would later become Nightline during the Iran Hostage crisis with my Papaw, and keeping an observation ever since, with some political science courses and a set of beliefs and bias, as an armchair observer, my gut is what is going on in Syria is less to do with the determination of the rebels and resistance to Al-Assad, but more to the instability in and around the region from the Oct festival attack and particularly, Putin's stretched resources and failure to take Ukraine by now. Putin has shown he is weak, low of resources, manpower and a bad ally.

All those instabilities and stretched resources led to the perfect storm that allowed the Syrian rebels to unite and do their push.

There are much smarter people than I and this is just my gut from a lifetime of keen interest. Israels desolation of Hezbollah, et al, has been a great mitigator and aid for the rebels.

With that said, if history has shown us anything, without some sort of authoritarian system, I don't see how peace can be achieved because the different factions will soon be battling each other for that power. Fundamentalists vs secular. I hope the many years of devastation changes that historical thirst for dominance.

This is from my armchair. I'm sure others have a different view from their armchair and knowledge base
